Itinerary
Your journey begins with a spectacular flight into Paro International Airport, where, on clear days, panoramic views of the Himalayan range greet you even before landing. After arrival and immigration formalities, you will be driven through a picturesque river valley to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. Depending on your arrival time, you may begin light sightseeing or simply relax and acclimatize at your hotel. If time permits, you can explore the vibrant weekend market or enjoy an evening walk through the city, ending the day with a visit to Tashichho Dzong, which houses the throne room of His Majesty the King. You will spend the night in Thimphu, at an altitude of approximately 2,400 meters.
Today is dedicated to discovering the cultural and spiritual life of Bhutan’s capital. You will visit the handmade paper mill and the School of Arts and Crafts, where students learn Bhutan’s traditional thirteen arts. You will also observe an archery match, Bhutan’s national sport, and explore the National Library. After lunch, the tour continues with a visit to the Memorial Chorten, built in honor of the Third King, followed by a stop at the Buddha Dordenma viewpoint, which offers sweeping views of the Thimphu Valley. The day concludes with visits to Changangkha Lhakhang, the Motithang Takin Preserve, and the peaceful Zilukha Nunnery before returning to your hotel in Thimphu.
After breakfast, you will drive to the warmer Punakha Valley, crossing the beautiful Dochula Pass at 3,150 meters. The pass is adorned with 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens and offers breathtaking views of the eastern Himalayan range on clear days. Descending from the pass, you will enjoy a gentle walk through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility. In the afternoon, you will visit Punakha Dzong, widely regarded as the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan, showcasing exquisite Bhutanese architecture and craftsmanship. Overnight will be in Punakha, at an altitude of 1,350 meters.
This day allows you to enjoy Punakha at a relaxed pace. After breakfast, you will hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a scenic uphill walk that rewards you with panoramic views of the valley. Later, you will visit Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge, which spans the Punakha River and offers an exciting perspective of rural life. The afternoon is free for optional activities such as visiting a traditional farmhouse or simply relaxing and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Overnight will be in Punakha.
Following a leisurely breakfast, you will visit the ruins of Wangdue Phodrang Dzong before continuing eastward. The drive takes you over Pelela Pass at 3,300 meters, marking the traditional boundary between western and central Bhutan. Upon arrival in Trongsa, you will explore Trongsa Dzong, the ancestral home of Bhutan’s royal family. In the evening, you may enjoy a quiet walk through the town and breathe in the fresh mountain air rising from the Mangdechhu River below. Overnight will be in Trongsa, at an altitude of 2,200 meters.
In the morning, you will visit the watchtower museum overlooking Trongsa Dzong before driving to Bumthang via Yotongla Pass at 3,400 meters. Along the way, you will stop at a traditional Yatha wool weaving center, famous for its handmade textiles. Later in the day, you will visit Jakar Dzong, also known as the White Bird Fortress, which overlooks the Chokhor Valley. The evening is free for a leisurely stroll through Chamkhar town. Overnight will be in Jakar, at an altitude of 2,650 meters.
Today is dedicated to exploring Bumthang, often considered the spiritual heart of Bhutan. You will visit Jambay Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in the kingdom, followed by Kurjey Lhakhang, a sacred site associated with Guru Rinpoche and the royal family. You may choose to walk across a suspension bridge to visit Tamshing Lhakhang and nearby villages or travel by vehicle. The day also includes a visit to the Swiss Farm before ending with an evening stroll through Jakar town, where you can sample local delicacies unique to the valley. Overnight will be in Jakar.
After breakfast, you will embark on an excursion to the picturesque village of Ura. En route, you will stop at the Burning Lake, a site of spiritual significance, before crossing Shertang La Pass at 3,573 meters. On clear days, Mount Gangkar Puensum, the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, can be seen dominating the northern skyline. After exploring Ura village and experiencing its traditional way of life, you will return to Jakar for the night.
After enjoying the cool morning air of Bumthang, you will drive toward the serene Phobjikha Valley, crossing both Yotongla and Pelela passes once again. Phobjikha is known for its wide glacial valley, pristine beauty, and as the winter home of the endangered black-necked cranes. Upon arrival, you will visit Gangtey Monastery, the largest Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan. In the evening, you may enjoy the scenic Gangtey Nature Trail, weather permitting. Overnight will be in Phobjikha, at an altitude of 2,900 meters.
This day is reserved for rest and gentle exploration in the peaceful Phobjikha Valley. You may enjoy leisurely walks, village visits, and quiet moments surrounded by nature. There will be opportunities to meet local residents and learn about their way of life, making this a deeply personal and reflective day. Overnight will be in Phobjikha.
After breakfast, you will drive back to Paro Valley. Upon arrival, you will visit the National Museum, which houses an impressive collection of artifacts ranging from natural history to sacred art. You will then walk to Paro Dzong and cross the historic wooden cantilever bridge that connects the dzong to the town. The evening is free for a relaxed stroll through old Paro town, exploring handicraft shops and local cafés. Overnight will be in Paro, at an altitude of 2,200 meters.
Today you will visit the cliffside temples of Dzongdrakha before continuing to Chelela Pass, one of the highest road passes in Bhutan at 3,988 meters. On clear days, the pass offers spectacular views of Mount Jomolhari, one of Bhutan’s most sacred peaks. The day allows time for quiet reflection, photography, and optional activities such as a picnic or prayer flag hoisting, depending on your preference. Overnight will be in Paro.
This day marks the highlight of your Bhutan journey. After breakfast, you will drive to Ramthangka and begin the hike to Taktsang Monastery, famously known as Tiger’s Nest. The trail climbs steadily through pine forests, offering breathtaking views along the way. Perched dramatically on a cliff 900 meters above the valley floor, the monastery is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in the Buddhist world. The hike may take most of the day, depending on your pace, but reaching the monastery is a deeply rewarding and emotional experience. After returning, you may choose to relax with a traditional hot stone bath or massage. Overnight will be in Paro.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Paro International Airport for your onward journey. As you depart the Kingdom of Bhutan, you will carry with you lasting memories of its landscapes, spirituality, and gentle way of life. This marks the end of the Whole Bhutan Tour.
